What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Immediate Actions
- Call us immediately - Time is critical for the best outcomes, especially with knocked-out teeth
- Describe your pain level and symptoms in detail so we can prepare for your specific emergency
- Follow our emergency care instructions over the phone - our team will guide you through immediate care steps
For Tooth Trauma
- Save any broken tooth pieces in milk, saliva, or saline solution - never let them dry out
- Handle knocked-out teeth by the crown (top part) only, never touch the root
- Try to reinsert a knocked-out tooth gently if possible, or store in milk immediately
- Apply gentle pressure to control bleeding from the tooth socket
For Pain and Swelling
- Apply cold compress to the outside of your face for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling
- Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the package (ibuprofen works best for dental pain)
- Rinse with warm salt water to help reduce bacteria and provide mild pain relief
- Avoid aspirin directly on gums - it can cause tissue damage and chemical burns
What NOT to Do:
- Don't ignore severe pain - it typically indicates a serious problem requiring immediate attention
- Don't delay calling - many dental emergencies are time-sensitive
- Don't use heat on swollen areas as it can worsen inflammation
- Don't try to remove stuck objects with sharp instruments - you could cause more damage

Yes! We maintain flexible scheduling specifically for emergency cases and can typically see you the same day you call.
What should I do about a knocked-out tooth?
Keep the tooth moist (ideally place it back in the socket or store in milk), and get to our office immediately. Quick action greatly improves the chances of saving your tooth.
Will insurance cover my emergency visit?
While we're out-of-network with most insurance providers, we file claims for you and work to maximize your benefits. We also offer flexible payment options including financing.
What if I have an emergency after hours?
If you are experiencing a true emergency, such as significant swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury to the mouth or face, please go to your nearest emergency room immediately. For all other urgent dental issues, including toothaches, broken teeth, or lost crowns, please call our office and leave a message. We will return your call as soon as possible during normal business hours and make every effort to see you promptly.
How quickly can you stop my dental pain?
Pain relief is our first priority. In most cases, we can provide significant pain reduction within the first few minutes of your appointment through effective anesthesia and treatment.
